Wow, this has been a fast paced Summer. We have made several trips to Elk Rapids, Michigan and Mackinac Island to my galleries. They are always whirlwind trips as I attempt to also gather new reference photos for future work. I am also in the process of finalizing a show-date TBT.<br />
Aside from trips my nose has been to the grindstone most of the Summer. Well, along with gardening and chasing my 1-1/2 year old grandson around the yard. Oh, and did I mention that my daughter had foot surgery 3 weeks ago and have been taking care of her. She is not allowed to place any weight on her foot until August 5th. In addition she developed a blood clot and infection in that foot. Luckily, neither appear to be serious (clot very small) but all concerns just the same.<br />
The painting in this post is a vintage 53 foot Chris Craft Constellation owned by the owners of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. It is their baby. This painting is oil and the size is 2-1/2 inches by 3-1/2 inches.<br />

I love painting landscapes from all the seasons but seem to be especially inspired by Fall. My obsession begins in August when the sun takes on a more golden glow. I begin racing around with my camera and won't stop till all the leaves drop. This painting Fall Splendor is 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" and will be available at Twisted Fish Gallery mid May.<br />

This is my latest Trompe Lóeil painting entitled Memories of Mackinac. The idea behind the composition is a tourist returning home from the island and tacking up all their favorite photos along with snippets of island flowers collected on the way home. It is meant to look like everything is tacked up on a white board. Notice that I carried the shadow of the lower lilac onto the frame to complete the 3 dimensional look. The painting was done in oil and the image is 12" x 16". I have 3 more compositions waiting to paint between miniatures. Can't wait!<br />
This painting will be available for purchase on the island in May.<br />

During the winter months I have the luxury of experimenting on artwork other than miniature. This piece entitled Mackinac Memories is a trompe l'öeil piece done in oil and is 11 inches by 14 inches. This piece was featured last November in the Scarab Club gold medal show in Detroit. I very much enjoyed working on this piece and have since completed another with more trompe löeil pieces in the wings waiting.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Well, lets face it, we are all sick of Winter. I have managed to hibernate quite a bit and paint like mad. Even though I am tired of all the snow, somehow I never tire of painting beautiful Winter scenes. The good news is that I discovered that much of the software problems I was dealing with must have been the start of my computer dying. With the new computer I can actually blog without much difficulty!<br />
<br />
This year has been a very busy one for our family. I am now represented by three galleries that are keeping me pretty busy. As a result I didn't have time to enter any mini shows this year. Hopefully, next year I will be able to do so. In addition, I spent considerable time this year planting a perennial garden. I planted may of the old favorites such as hollyhocks, zinnias, delphiniums and of course lilac trees. I have been wanting to spend some time painting victorian inspired still life pieces and thought it would be fun to incorporate my own flowers. I can never do anything the easy way!<br />
<br />
Just today I mailed my last commission for Christmas presents. As a result I cannot show my latest works for fear of messing up someones surprise. I can however, show you my favorite work of art, my 3-1/2 week old grandson. Isn't he beautiful? Not that I am a proud grandmother. No, not me. I may have to do a miniature portrait of him.<br />

I received a phone call yesterday telling me that my painting Grand Arrival had been juried into the 2012 Mackinac Island Art Exhibit that will take place this summer at the Manoogian Museum on the island. The theme for this exhibit is the Grand Hotel in honor of its 125th birthday. I was completely blown away to learn that their were 80 entries and only 15 were chosen for the exhibit, mine being one of them!!! The best part is that their are six cash prizes to be announced in June. Wish me luck!<br /><br /><div></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-13067581196504177352012-03-02T16:48:00.003-08:002012-03-02T17:03:39.424-08:00Artists Of Mackinac Island<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTp5QVknsd_95HUNemHPBC8rwLvtv_c6WssKmxFucSyRZ2_LMiy5NqU521L27gYF6AcFoMD_STomreOPNZ06XA1SQmg_vC56-LyR_C2r7Ycu2RFUzHIYzQDDERAkZ7BcKaGztAs5HiEdE/s1600/Grand+Arrival.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 320px; height: 208px; text-align: center; display: block; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5715466794358011890" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTp5QVknsd_95HUNemHPBC8rwLvtv_c6WssKmxFucSyRZ2_LMiy5NqU521L27gYF6AcFoMD_STomreOPNZ06XA1SQmg_vC56-LyR_C2r7Ycu2RFUzHIYzQDDERAkZ7BcKaGztAs5HiEdE/s320/Grand+Arrival.jpg" /></a>I am pleased to announce that I have been invited to participate in an exhibition at the Crooked Tree Art Center in Petoskey, Michigan, entitled Artists of Mackinac Island. I will be sharing the details of this gallery in a later blog.<br /><br />Till next time,Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-63909412956959906732011-11-27T17:31:00.001-08:002011-11-27T17:47:57.086-08:00Thanksgiving Time<div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5gmjb1oaoFMw89fmE5zdQmWl-zwmTknJftz3ung4axSI3xF2TQaiZuYC8xrpO4tDKxruR8S0JfErbef6WoigtXVfVV__Q_oxcW2aAwRKKIZA2SlRaunlnbkcQBQoPgjCHlg0kK8-oDXQ/s1600/Eastern+Market+Morn0001.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 320px; height: 254px; text-align: center; display: block; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5679853568282640738" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5gmjb1oaoFMw89fmE5zdQmWl-zwmTknJftz3ung4axSI3xF2TQaiZuYC8xrpO4tDKxruR8S0JfErbef6WoigtXVfVV__Q_oxcW2aAwRKKIZA2SlRaunlnbkcQBQoPgjCHlg0kK8-oDXQ/s320/Eastern+Market+Morn0001.jpg" /></a>Time is flying by as usual. I have been keeping very busy with several commissions for Christmas presents. Since they are presents, I don't feel I can post them at this time. I would hate to spoil someone's surprise.</div><div> </div><div>I was very honored to learn that my painting Eastern Market Morn won honorable mention at the Scarab Club Gold Medal show this past week. Competition includes some of Detroit's finest artists. It is always heartwarming to have a miniature stand up to the big boys!</div><div> </div><div>Thanksgiving at our house this year was very quiet. My husband had some extensive surgery a week before Thanksgiving and wasn't up to much of anything. That was OK. In Michigan we have a bavarian town about 45 minutes from our home that is noted for great chicken dinners. We we fortunate to have our son pick up a carry out of chicken, mashed potatoes, dressing-the whole works! All we had to do was heat and serve. We spent the day in front of the fireplace eating and watching old movies. Quite relaxing.</div><div> </div><div>This year I am thankful for many things, especially that my husband is on the mend. Yesterday we starting putting up Christmas decorations. I love the extra lights this time of year. The weather here has been quite dreary with pouring rain the last couple of days.</div><div> </div><div>I hope everyone has enjoyed their holiday week and able to spend quality time with relatives.</div><div> </div><div>Till next time,<br /></div><div></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-54139333479303773172011-10-08T15:43:00.000-07:002011-10-08T16:28:06.449-07:00Where Do I Begin?<div><div> </div><div align="center"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnwAhSO_XU3f0Tho5e6dMkgkyGMZyvhMfjIkuIG009h80NioT4Aa4wkpt9omQqCUGkrNvhj7uAUOVrAGn17Y3zJ38CCkm9VHmXMDb1N8k0UiupQN3AyrYAkVI2cFg8rGvlcVvVjSic9fQ/s1600/PA070092.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 320px; height: 240px; text-align: center; display: block; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5661258696541863474" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnwAhSO_XU3f0Tho5e6dMkgkyGMZyvhMfjIkuIG009h80NioT4Aa4wkpt9omQqCUGkrNvhj7uAUOVrAGn17Y3zJ38CCkm9VHmXMDb1N8k0UiupQN3AyrYAkVI2cFg8rGvlcVvVjSic9fQ/s320/PA070092.JPG" /></a> My backyard, wow, most leaves are down!<br /><div>Wow, where to begin after not updating in so long? I am not even going to try to describe all that we have done since June. Well, we did finish the front lawn, actually just last week as every time we put sod down, it would burn up before it finally knitted to the soil. So, we gave up until a couple of weeks ago. Glad it is over.<div><div><div>My husband and I made several trips to both Mackinac Island and Elk Rapids to paint in front of my galleries. We met many wonderful friends along the way. Already this year we have spent time on Mackinac Island. My dear husband bought me a new bike ,on the island for mothers day. I love it! It is called a Biria, very unique design that reminds me a lot of the bike I had when I was a girl. We were having so much fun riding around on the island I did not take any pictures-go figure.<br />Weather the last few weeks has been strange. Lots of 50 degree days with buckets of rain. Finally, we got some warm weather and sun. With it came a ton of work around our house. Last fall we had an issue with one of the walls of our home and basically I had more bulldozers on my lawn than on the road. Bottom line-I lost most of my lawn and flower garden-uh!!! Three weeks ago we guilted our two grown children into helping us and we stripped off the old lawn/weeds and laid down new sod on about half the lawn. My back has been killing me ever since. Hopefully, in the next week or so we will have the job done. I can't wait.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrlN3nc6kduAl4B7Dw41MPr1SMcNw3xiMAzrnbK3ZJwitxfpU2-uWLv-b3JZ2VZZDDVFeV-VYxf4xuXT3Z1XM6ZL7TNgzEcbs6h3LRMDiZ3klzQQJV3y4tp9gwrNcgmESlSzl9UmPQ0Ys/s1600/P6070182.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617493324690070258" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrlN3nc6kduAl4B7Dw41MPr1SMcNw3xiMAzrnbK3ZJwitxfpU2-uWLv-b3JZ2VZZDDVFeV-VYxf4xuXT3Z1XM6ZL7TNgzEcbs6h3LRMDiZ3klzQQJV3y4tp9gwrNcgmESlSzl9UmPQ0Ys/s320/P6070182.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMRT1Sa0qLbdlLO-IGHnExqn4yV8Ujghs7TfRvS84Xe_ji9SYU5gZHNrraiUZ_YuYjLcDwBJVP0jrVRX-EKO7bNtf3i9lrcgjUwUeNOpAJH1FLZYuaeCOEwqc77SAGgMhiiw3XltToS98/s1600/P6070181.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617493318764932450" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMRT1Sa0qLbdlLO-IGHnExqn4yV8Ujghs7TfRvS84Xe_ji9SYU5gZHNrraiUZ_YuYjLcDwBJVP0jrVRX-EKO7bNtf3i9lrcgjUwUeNOpAJH1FLZYuaeCOEwqc77SAGgMhiiw3XltToS98/s320/P6070181.JPG" /></a> In between all the yard work we spent a day in Elk Rapids and I painted for my gallery there, Twisted Fish. It was their Art Beat gallery hopping day. The weather was wonderful and I met many wonderful people. I always enjoy talking the Bob and "Charlie", the owners who have become friends over the years.</div><br /><br /><div>I will be camping this coming weekend in Mackinaw City and painting on the island at Victorian Summer Gallery ,Saturday and Sunday, as part of the Lilac Festival Celebration. I am looking forward to seeing the many friends I have made on the island as well as meeting new friends. The kids will get watering duty back home! I will be delivering Rain On Main, one of my latest pieces of Main Street, taken from a photo of a very rainy fall day. I was inspired to paint this scene because of the reflections on the pavement. I hope you enjoy it as well.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbDRRUdZXM7fBoHhUp8vPryv-DwvoqlzgUmoS7QoeN7vv_3Pl6VpyuGY5JvSeZCF-UGR3rrrLraVhmz9N1H3EgSLucg55GctLYIRsHGc0WpRWevYs0E-LrSUTNOisjp4Wbi71DaUo503E/s1600/Rain+On+Main.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 194px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5617493313512947922" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbDRRUdZXM7fBoHhUp8vPryv-DwvoqlzgUmoS7QoeN7vv_3Pl6VpyuGY5JvSeZCF-UGR3rrrLraVhmz9N1H3EgSLucg55GctLYIRsHGc0WpRWevYs0E-LrSUTNOisjp4Wbi71DaUo503E/s320/Rain+On+Main.jpg" /></a> Till next time,</div><br /><br /><div>Gail<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-76027038246142045042011-04-21T14:44:00.001-07:002011-04-21T15:19:40.796-07:00This and ThatThose of you who have been following this blog are aware that I was accepted as a member of The Scarab Club in downtown Detroit last summer. I was again honored, recently with acceptance of two of my miniatures and an award for The Blacksmith at the Scarab Club's current show entitled Working Class Heroes. My husband and I attended the opening reception shown below. It was very well attended!<br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5598157820417173442" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4VlQCTluyXFzdVG5ThkVRIeYVmIxofjh30p44pdJ7HVnPGQ2ss7osry2H9Q0OeG-xry1a9_LAX31Tn_WXML3-7c3yDMvwkkEk0Re5-_cDuEi4br1tO39-1yX3xYXZ1_QMJjkE2asKeaQ/s320/P4010126.JPG" /><br />I love the Scarab Club building. The desire to form an arts organization in Detroit during the first third of the 20th century was partially intertwined with the birth of automotive design and the evolution of advertising art inspired by the burgeoning automobile industry. Although generally viewed as a heavily industrial city, Detroit’s artistic community thrived from the success of the automobile.<br />Many of the original founding members of the Scarab Club consisted of automotive designers, advertising illustrators, graphic artists, photographers, architects, and automobile company owners. Scarab Club members inspired each others’ artistic spirit by entering their artwork in the Annual Exhibition of Michigan Artists held at the Detroit Institute of Arts under the auspices of the Scarab Club from 1911 to 1928 and the DIA from 1929 to 1974.<br />Besides hosting various events, such as the costumed Scarab Club balls for members and others to attract the general public, the Scarab Club managed working artist studios that still continue today. Since its founding in 1907, the Scarab Club continues to be a driving force in the artistic community and is proud to serve Michigan as a cultural stimulant for artistic diversity in the 21st century.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWdkGBv8Z-NfghRIvcuhcYR85mcZ8Ix7PrYtQ-b1W-Qn7-MIdkA2M7CcqnT6iIqU2yQU2DS-QaAMyZ3jHdL_aEZsYyN5vF3b5H2LyrsdyaZRdBTu5iYTKCn0AfPt9pzZV-YZj8yhvnArc/s1600/The+Blacksmith+Hayton%25231.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 237px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5598157800945994562" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWdkGBv8Z-NfghRIvcuhcYR85mcZ8Ix7PrYtQ-b1W-Qn7-MIdkA2M7CcqnT6iIqU2yQU2DS-QaAMyZ3jHdL_aEZsYyN5vF3b5H2LyrsdyaZRdBTu5iYTKCn0AfPt9pzZV-YZj8yhvnArc/s320/The+Blacksmith+Hayton%25231.jpg" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:180%;">The Blacksmith<br /><br /></span><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 238px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5598157803598393362" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEmqEPUldZQImRD2rFUQgXkgW5HhXEAT0eivo2jUPRUuNGYOQAnC-eAy6ERLAAUfnzLED4nUfE7l2IF9j5yR8PvJ_YI5hhIwmGamNl8Zr6AIlbJgtM5D4uVOTIgzcfQoyxuGvxdBSDdTg/s320/Driving+the+Mules+Hayton%25232.jpg" /><br /><br /><div><span style="font-size:180%;">Driving the Mules </span></div><span style="font-size:180%;"><br /><div align="left"></span><span style="font-size:100%;">Well, we finally got fed up with the weather around here and spent 10 days in Florida. We have warned the dogs NOT to ask to go outside (we know that will only last so long) and are even sitting under blankets. Although daylight savings time officially starts at 2am, you would never know it by our weather. Today it has rained, snowed, sleet, you name it, we have had it. It is the kind of day where the damp settles into your bones and stays. I must be getting old!<br />I have been painting non-stop for the past month. I am currently working on 3 paintings to enter in Michigan competitions. These three are very complicated images that have taken forever. I really enjoy the challenge. I have also completed a couple of paintings for Mackinac Island and three for Twisted Fish Gallery in Elk Rapids, Mich. Aside from the weather on days like today, Michigan is a great place to live. This state provides a tremendous variety of images to paint from. I am never bored.<br />The big news from the Hayton household is that our son, Jeff is officially engaged. They leave home? I thought that was a myth! Seriously, he is marrying a very nice girl and we are happy for both of them.<br />My latest pieces are below. They are both acrylic and measure 3-1/2 inches by 4-3/4". A bit larger than my normal format. Who knew painting an extra inch or so could take so long. Go figure.<br />Till next time,<br /><br /><br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 237px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583395678575684050" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBY45-f7vdUpu90kJWIKotU0HZu3pTzkt16i3amkhWMtkPRaP1CbkyaWU-dAYk7f8xbYUmSXP5TCBM-Nr_pmS9bYJNenqwEjfHtLnzrKIcQttU5wV0QT9gMGxSulf-T_QbsDUc17irjT4/s320/The+Blacksmith+Hayton%25231.jpg" /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeRUPbytdT7t_QxJAAJ-6be8HvMzVv_TEcn2lDAuBqj6XV8vp34XURjg0XAV_Vp1N7T64fqRkq7C3HdZ3WpbWz2ZC3wVTtb9rZBY4IWT7giBGkPMoVDzDj5x96v6_wv5yo2LieIXzdWic/s1600/Driving+the+Mules+Hayton%25232.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 238px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583395677935022018" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeRUPbytdT7t_QxJAAJ-6be8HvMzVv_TEcn2lDAuBqj6XV8vp34XURjg0XAV_Vp1N7T64fqRkq7C3HdZ3WpbWz2ZC3wVTtb9rZBY4IWT7giBGkPMoVDzDj5x96v6_wv5yo2LieIXzdWic/s320/Driving+the+Mules+Hayton%25232.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div></div></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-43203607281501077282011-02-04T18:20:00.000-08:002011-02-04T18:48:55.101-08:00Thinking Warm ThoughtsAs I am sitting here writing this blog I notice that according to the icon on my computer, it is currently 19 degrees outside. This is a heat wave!!! Like much of the country we have been experiencing challenging weather. We have had single digit highs and freezing rain with several inches of snow. Such is the life of a Michigander every year! It seems like ages ago now, that our family traveled to Disney World early in January. The following pictures are the walk we took through our condo complex on the way to breakfast the morning we were leaving to come home. I am really bad about remembering to take pictures. This particular morning was cloudy, but warm by Michigan standards and a pleasant walk. While in Florida, our kids hit the parks every day while we just soaked up the atmosphere. Unfortunately, it never got warm enough to put the top down on our Jeep;maybe next time.<br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570026525882932930" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhCk-0tesTdGg30-jMV6dcLNA7TPrD4cFjbaY_0lD7TGtgWXo4QwlfPs96vZF3E_MMhSQWKig81wDCqIeUaSZ6Mi08JbacV2P5Q61PJ5vAtyfCDMmDAQQZJUfDr0ZIlfHDvNSbSwmlqFA/s320/P1150108.JPG" /><br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570026520958140226" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAwI2PDuzKRLu4iQXQg-1npenzMAFCXzOYJUTyAO8fbv3b-pR_q0ksa6FXNTOwFJ4GkwKpZ75vVGo8kQH1p5A3FZnEPgD0BMBGaEQSoInUWhzSKkve_AbtzQT74W1UyjPfUX0DRlT2DNM/s320/P1150106.JPG" /><br />Since returning home I have been working long hours in my studio preparing for May on Mackinac Island when tourism begins in earnest. Today, I only have one finished piece to share as I have many 90% complete works of art. I do this quite often. Work on something and then throw it on the shelf for a few weeks. It helps me to see my work with fresh eyes! The piece below is called On A Clear Day and believe it or not, I did not embellish the colors at all-it really was that beautiful the day I took this shot. We were touring the fort up on the bluff and this is a view of the town and harbot below. Can't wait for spring!<br />I hope everyone is keeping warm and enjoying the solitude of Winter.<br /><br />Till next time,<br /><br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 237px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570027276574635554" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji0-WIQdlgVecaYoDTgZ_gEVuyRTwUMg0lLeMZsXigTZPJtfZK9JiGe1ecxLiMPhf6ne5ApFQ1ckisqie6N3I0igjESq8hWaH1dPN_4lqonw5xwlIh_UTRpT91jW0pZ-GW32ppcPd0jDI/s320/On+a+Clear+Day.jpg" /><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1icUC2KtmpRCJN06n4EIobAdzGcGqR2mza68bs62DZJ6YjxpVR0aXT5l1GjWmIPf1INkrwvDjVltkjjeA7zPajoPaeFiu1sxP0C2j02FQdohVryYQrnr7H681hljfq2ixBU1xLZmwX9M/s1600/P1150106.JPG"></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-45072742547562232412010-12-13T14:30:00.001-08:002010-12-13T14:57:27.684-08:00It's Christmas Time!Christmas is just around the corner and we are so relieved to be DONE with construction. Just in time!!! I thought you might like to see some pictures of what we have been up to. Below is what our family room looked like in October. Bare studs and concrete floor. The outside wasn't much better as we had a 5 foot trench around the perimeter of the house.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1V8BqdmxNKced1_uLVeWvHEsBTcthrstnRP-8E3mtqB26ZItIUykcLjXxn2m5IZcXQVjZ1SSn0lWLGCzJKlm2lA869QHgOMaRAIg5VDVQ7_cZHr74Vj_V0JX3uGjr2OR9AYQqHwrg3ac/s1600/DSC_0168.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 214px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550300651905006178" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1V8BqdmxNKced1_uLVeWvHEsBTcthrstnRP-8E3mtqB26ZItIUykcLjXxn2m5IZcXQVjZ1SSn0lWLGCzJKlm2lA869QHgOMaRAIg5VDVQ7_cZHr74Vj_V0JX3uGjr2OR9AYQqHwrg3ac/s320/DSC_0168.JPG" /></a> This is a picture of the same room that I took this morning. It is fast becoming my favorite spot in the house especially with a wind chill below zero today!! The other end of the room is a game area with pool table, darts etc. It is a room we always congregate in on Christmas day.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVFslixo6JK-1ICA23o5CLwsrCkzj6FMXM2vuLQR6_f7Ybdmj4qdN6WAD03aznpeYFyFzZpn2MS9FkaoBsBH3JCsOan_yDOFceAZtsvHlh55xeqo92sqJrTnLLjeZT6Fe0XO8YlcE5s6Y/s1600/DSC_0177.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 214px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550300647507238066" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVFslixo6JK-1ICA23o5CLwsrCkzj6FMXM2vuLQR6_f7Ybdmj4qdN6WAD03aznpeYFyFzZpn2MS9FkaoBsBH3JCsOan_yDOFceAZtsvHlh55xeqo92sqJrTnLLjeZT6Fe0XO8YlcE5s6Y/s320/DSC_0177.JPG" /></a> We even got as far as putting up a tree! I am so excited to not be living in piles and construction dust in every corner of the house.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKAS3ucqsyTuxqu6h-Wgj8osEM_PFlMIODktA-zAvsKfPkgDUhXzshs86GHVnVukop-5p7m-5zE-zIDFp4mAOuFwmO8FNPSdWmOdkoDKy0SELhgnsPFmuQmKyyFvc94pDpBDYReeU2Gts/s1600/PC130095.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550300640362149218" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKAS3ucqsyTuxqu6h-Wgj8osEM_PFlMIODktA-zAvsKfPkgDUhXzshs86GHVnVukop-5p7m-5zE-zIDFp4mAOuFwmO8FNPSdWmOdkoDKy0SELhgnsPFmuQmKyyFvc94pDpBDYReeU2Gts/s320/PC130095.JPG" /></a> In between everything I have been doing some painting. I completed a commission of the Island House Hotel for a nice couple that were celebrating their 30th anniversary. It seems that the Island House is where they always stay and holds many memories.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAMPArfuMWVZvFhi6omGfGssKatC6CJP9vkHJ4m7LKNmxRCzII-8A4C-AunUElHZjpWLQcB9YmH2OaQaejeW9oaZ595KBsQtPIxiqyNqx-RhAFrV3xhhzOxM_soP-yoDlHQxrH0tanuDo/s1600/Island+House0001.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550300637170654818" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAMPArfuMWVZvFhi6omGfGssKatC6CJP9vkHJ4m7LKNmxRCzII-8A4C-AunUElHZjpWLQcB9YmH2OaQaejeW9oaZ595KBsQtPIxiqyNqx-RhAFrV3xhhzOxM_soP-yoDlHQxrH0tanuDo/s320/Island+House0001.jpg" /></a> I also completed a painting of Vinnie, one of my friends faithful companions. Shortly after arriving home from Mackinac Island we had several days of pouring rain in our area. Funny thing. All of a sudden we had wet carpet in our walkout family room/game room. Horror of horrors-the walls were leaking. What a mess. Although this room is partly below grade, it is constructed with wolmanized wood. My husband knew we had to find out what was going on especially with fall and winter fast approaching. He ripped the drywall off the wall and was met with dripping wet insulation. I was met with instant asthma and allergy attacks and was exiled to live in the motorhome for a couple of weeks! Bottom line, we had to hire contractors to remove trees in our side yard, dig 5 feet down and rebuild the wall. Doing this meant destroying out front porch and front garden as well as the bulk of our front lawn. We had more vehicles in our yard than were on the street! We also lost the stairway from our second floor deck. What a mess. It is a good thing that I am not rich. I would not do well with hired help in my home all the time. I really like my privacy and found it very difficult to paint this past few weeks. Finally, we are somewhat put back together and painting the inside and laying flooring. The worst is over.<br />I have been able to paint a couple of pieces shown below and I am currently working on two commissions that I hope to complete this week. It feels so good to be back to my normal life. I hope!<br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjehRPuXt4ApQicE42UyYEW3UArH1dRn-zYvC_qEL7VKmfa4mkQ-RjpWekFUaiDwoxnmnn83d1nABC1vC0HSnwHGG-vLnVQ8TFuOuJLJ_MHkKG37VVZO-vTB7lbyd-IbaoN96YjGMzck3M/s1600/Shalda+Creek+10001.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535865486124601730" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjehRPuXt4ApQicE42UyYEW3UArH1dRn-zYvC_qEL7VKmfa4mkQ-RjpWekFUaiDwoxnmnn83d1nABC1vC0HSnwHGG-vLnVQ8TFuOuJLJ_MHkKG37VVZO-vTB7lbyd-IbaoN96YjGMzck3M/s320/Shalda+Creek+10001.jpg" /></a> Shalda Creek Gouache 2-1/2" x 3-1/2"</div><div align="center"> </div><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXkUSesOF4PbvlYnsZiB2CJecOE6bhmOfJO2ycW9A3yHB1GJLczmbxI76jOYXzDPCuquzg-vqKYM0b22LahjfDj_QVR04Cm-243uez5icoejx42ZU7JiLFVhKQK2W7CZ0V73EasxE09Fc/s1600/Drum+and+fiddle+10001.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 242px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535865482220580866" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXkUSesOF4PbvlYnsZiB2CJecOE6bhmOfJO2ycW9A3yHB1GJLczmbxI76jOYXzDPCuquzg-vqKYM0b22LahjfDj_QVR04Cm-243uez5icoejx42ZU7JiLFVhKQK2W7CZ0V73EasxE09Fc/s320/Drum+and+fiddle+10001.jpg" /></a> Drum and Fiddle, Acrylic, 3-1/2" x 2-1/2"</div><div align="center"> </div><div align="left">Till next time (sooner than later)</div><div align="left">Gail<br /><br /></div><div align="center"></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-68051814728089607912010-09-08T19:05:00.000-07:002010-09-08T19:37:54.459-07:00My Show on Mackinac IslandWow, I cannot believe it has been a month since I updated my blog. To say I have been busy is an understatement. Last Saturday evening was the opening reception for my miniature show on Mackinac Island. It was a very eventful weekend.<br />We arrived on the island Friday as I had some framing to complete before the show. The weather was already getting nasty and was the beginning of a rough weekend on the island. The ferry ride was more like going to the amusement park and the wind was buckling our umbrellas in the opposite way they fold. Not to be deterred, we went about our business and helped the gallery owner finalize the setup of the show.<br />Friday evening was the opening reception for my friend Bill Murcko's show at the library that hosts art events as well. We fought our way over in the wind and driving rain (no cars on the island) and talked with Bill, Betty, his wife, and their son who had flown in from New York. I took a picture of Bill next to my favorite painting in the show. I love the expression on the girls face in this painting. One wonders what she is thinking about!<br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514731040713356082" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikZbMeg-buvUWjydS-QGC1jWuiQJjY7ca5eQj5DGCkjHWcGyltYTmN6P_DPtjllf3lEpG2oukQCxUB3Tj30eCzqBftZJnxMv5n3gyAE2fEtEg2w5KMCyY1rBvv3QzWZxz1sm0_ch9mY6Y/s320/P9030001.JPG" /><br />The opening reception for my show was Saturday evening and the weather again did not cooperate. I had a friend that called to say she would not be attending the show because she was not about to get on the ferry -it was so bad out. We found out later that more than one freighter heading into Lake Michigan thought better about continuing their trip and were anchored behind the island to shelter themselves from the storm. Many people did venture out, however ,and it was a great time. Below is Bill Murcko attending MY show along with the mayor of Mackinac Island (in pink) and her mother (back turned away) who is the most spry 90 year old I have met in my life.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioGVC_mLrnjdMJUCyqPPaqa49Scl2Z6Owi25b68nZ9Fz21Alb9Nak7iHtLVZVU8Xt0FYSCEihmtISzFui6wDbHJbROV7Y4pVSzS1iNm7SG3zLTq7fBnYoRunQhsM3bOy0miVOjU0szDPc/s1600/DSC_0009.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 214px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514731059794526674" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioGVC_mLrnjdMJUCyqPPaqa49Scl2Z6Owi25b68nZ9Fz21Alb9Nak7iHtLVZVU8Xt0FYSCEihmtISzFui6wDbHJbROV7Y4pVSzS1iNm7SG3zLTq7fBnYoRunQhsM3bOy0miVOjU0szDPc/s320/DSC_0009.JPG" /></a> The gentleman in the baseball cap is Rev. Vincent Carroll, pastor of Little Stone Church. I am talking with his wife Molly, who is also an artist. They were kind enough to invite us to services the following morning. We attended and we quite surprised to be sitting in front of the governor of Michigan who was up on the island for the annual Mackinac Bridge walk.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm06ZXZlA-to2YzoHhJfDBWgEKx_E78RKEVNFmPqqYyGFY05fq-ZhVGZllgjNxCV3NkyO4K_0TnhDg8CaPdzXt3AxJab6sJVkVClp7lxUY9dQptasMVcHZHrN2nUrxgx3DPxZfOQevyD8/s1600/DSC_0010.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 214px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514731051876553906" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm06ZXZlA-to2YzoHhJfDBWgEKx_E78RKEVNFmPqqYyGFY05fq-ZhVGZllgjNxCV3NkyO4K_0TnhDg8CaPdzXt3AxJab6sJVkVClp7lxUY9dQptasMVcHZHrN2nUrxgx3DPxZfOQevyD8/s320/DSC_0010.JPG" /></a> Its not polite to point! We left a week ago and camped just South of Mackinaw City for three nights. The weather was beautiful Clear skies every day. It was unusually warm and humid, however ,making walking around and picture taking a bit of work. The island was very crowded as the sailors were coming in from the Chicago to Mackinac Island race. I am told this is the longest fresh water race in the country! There were hundreds of sailboats in the race. We had a beautiful campsite with a view of the Mackinac Bridge connecting upper and lower Michigan. We could sit on the beach and watch the sailboats moving silently under the bridge on their way to the finish line. On our trip to the island on Tuesday, the above photo was the scene in the harbor! This photo was taken from the fort above the harbor. That wasn't all the boats as they were still trickling in!<br />We had a wonderful visit which included dinner with our artist friend Mary Lou Peters and her husband and a visit to our artist friend Bill Murcko's studio on the East Bluff of the island. Although we visit the island several times each year we hadn't toured the fort since our kids were little. We took tons of pictures of war reinactments and interiors of the school house, kitchen and living quarters. I have several paintings lined up already. We stopped by the gallery while on the island and delivered three new paintings. I was pleased to learn that two are sold. One of those paintings is an evening view of St. Anne Church. This church was quite a challenge with all the detail in the building. The blotches in the sky are not in the actual painting-don't know where they came from. I have had a request to paint a similar scene, so I am going to become real familiar with the detail of this church.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKlXsTuSodQ1412Gk1RwJmyjq4u7Nq3mTyM2B2rrBRokXHPNQ4fp6boQBgugU0kEYwDJ8B3OFqg_mqInHqVi3FxHDjW2Run_FJdRPnCDiPb6uNCNbwpKrTQR2WpWQ_0JGgTXqJIPUzaqU/s1600/St.+Anne+Evening.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 232px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500596018806311442" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKlXsTuSodQ1412Gk1RwJmyjq4u7Nq3mTyM2B2rrBRokXHPNQ4fp6boQBgugU0kEYwDJ8B3OFqg_mqInHqVi3FxHDjW2Run_FJdRPnCDiPb6uNCNbwpKrTQR2WpWQ_0JGgTXqJIPUzaqU/s320/St.+Anne+Evening.jpg" /></a> All too soon it was time to return home and we are back to work. I am currently working on another fudge maker and a porch scene from the Grand Hotel. Its hard to believe that it is August already. The summer is flying by. I hope everyone is getting out and enjoying the season.<br />Till next time,<br /><br /><div></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-72967708926880589462010-07-18T17:26:00.000-07:002010-07-18T17:40:00.030-07:00Nose To The Grindstone<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW6HGi-UJigQak7DT289eyqpqzqTQetPWNwowWtqonKir-BVqm-hSinyGw2OWzQsx-zy-Y9qRpQO8TJ7UFUVWkFOp0UWoUT75S6bp8SVT8Ji-dfmSRpAFLjtnxIAwVmiTTlgcLsm9lsso/s1600/Doud's+Farm+Fresh0001.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495407967300065986" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW6HGi-UJigQak7DT289eyqpqzqTQetPWNwowWtqonKir-BVqm-hSinyGw2OWzQsx-zy-Y9qRpQO8TJ7UFUVWkFOp0UWoUT75S6bp8SVT8Ji-dfmSRpAFLjtnxIAwVmiTTlgcLsm9lsso/s320/Doud's+Farm+Fresh0001.jpg" /></a> The last couple of weeks I have been pretty much living in my studio. Not that I am complaining! Once a day I will pop my head out the door to check the mail and remember what season it is. Also once in a while I will go outside long enough to let my neighbors know I am still alive. Our big splurge lately is to take the Wrangler out in the evening with the top down and soak in the summer night air. Um!!!<br />Last week we spent the day in Elk Rapids at Twisted Fish Gallery and next week we are off to Mackinac Island again. These little breaks are good for gathering reference material and recharging the batteries. I am looking forward, in particular to touring the new Manoogian Art Museum on the island that had its dedication on Wednesday evening. Mr Manoogian is well known in the Michigan area for his generosity and fabulous art collection. He also resides on the island during the summer.<br />The two paintings posted are only some of my completed works. The above is a view of the produce section of Doud's Grocery Store on Mackinac Island. It measures 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" and done in acrylic. The second painting is called Iroquois Autumn and is a view of the hotel patio area overlooking the ferry dock and downtown buildings. This painting measures 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" also done in acrylic.<br />Till next time,<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiY02nfgZvceU4xQJnIQog8XL-LnbsyKWXfflW0fzAVyKdWvnX9v8rZwV0azet1lTDCFwUwrgZlotIST7QpxtUqAbj7RttEBu-kOfvADe9rvxMnakrIigifocPAzeIhwG51Ebl1pdvAG0/s1600/Iroquois+Autumn.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 235px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495407961878005442" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiY02nfgZvceU4xQJnIQog8XL-LnbsyKWXfflW0fzAVyKdWvnX9v8rZwV0azet1lTDCFwUwrgZlotIST7QpxtUqAbj7RttEBu-kOfvADe9rvxMnakrIigifocPAzeIhwG51Ebl1pdvAG0/s320/Iroquois+Autumn.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-2477995847593056422010-07-01T17:58:00.000-07:002010-07-01T18:16:02.961-07:00Time Is Flying!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8QwmURJBvsiSq3R9mQBnxzipHELN1TS53G0yVO7M_BD5ATy2tYHg5dzzyUmKI1fS_brqo33y4nD8waFBNfh3mZ8bX7iQ2q4w-jf98YRp9ITefMM7EesCTj_MZb3CVCfjj8CNm0DJIQkY/s1600/Blessing+of+the+Animals.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 319px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489107477640979890" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8QwmURJBvsiSq3R9mQBnxzipHELN1TS53G0yVO7M_BD5ATy2tYHg5dzzyUmKI1fS_brqo33y4nD8waFBNfh3mZ8bX7iQ2q4w-jf98YRp9ITefMM7EesCTj_MZb3CVCfjj8CNm0DJIQkY/s320/Blessing+of+the+Animals.jpg" /></a> Hi all!<br />I just can't believe it has been so long since I updated my blog. Forgive me. We have been on the run like many of you. Had a wonderful time on Mackinac Island for a couple of days and have also been to Elk Rapids and Sugatuck, Michigan. We are currently camping a few miles from our home. We have been here for two weeks almost a necessity to get a decent campsite. In the two weeks here, we have dodging severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. I LOVE thunder storms, but not in a motorhome! Unfortunately, last week one man was killed in a campground not far from here after his motorhome was thrown into a tree, I believe. One night while sitting here, the tornado siren went off, the wind rocked the motorhome and the power went out. I looked at my husband and said "get me out of here!!!!" Unfortunately, we only had our little ranger pickup truck with us. He threw our two golden retrievers in the front seat with us (it only seats two) and struggled to drive home as our dog kept on throwing the truck out of gear by running into the stick shift. It seems funny now, but at the time quite scary.<br /><br />I have been working on several pieces, but wanted to share this one with you. It is called Blessing of the Animals. This is a ceremony that takes place once a year on Mackinac Island during Lilac Festival. I couldn't resist painting these two darling girls having their dog blessed by the minister. Notice he wears gloves. He also blessed turtles and horses.<br /><br />This weekend we are having our kids and their boyfriends/girlfriends out for a cookout and fireworks show put on by the campground. Hope the weather cooperates.<br />Happy 4th of July to everyone and stay safe.<br />Till next time,Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-34539275141161675752010-06-10T12:34:00.000-07:002010-06-10T12:39:07.107-07:00Mackinac Island Bound<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHbkRkAJ_3IFtJsp9kwxIQMIZ3cQHpa2KnADgVPF-Riv3_NDfe-qKs8Kt_84t-srtCnyi0keg2Z2rttCfYEMQyPp63joIqAKlLClUgVBfDS9eXFXmbnsT-5HWoATRpSssYZ8U5hJC1Mv8/s1600/Fudge+Man.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 318px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481231104717116994" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHbkRkAJ_3IFtJsp9kwxIQMIZ3cQHpa2KnADgVPF-Riv3_NDfe-qKs8Kt_84t-srtCnyi0keg2Z2rttCfYEMQyPp63joIqAKlLClUgVBfDS9eXFXmbnsT-5HWoATRpSssYZ8U5hJC1Mv8/s320/Fudge+Man.jpg" /></a> My husband and I are busy packing up the motorhome for a trip to Mackinac Island. We will be camping on the mainland and day tripping to the island. I will be painting outside at Victorian Summer Gallery on Saturday from 12 noon to 4pm. Two times a year the galleries of Elk Rapids have Art Beat. This is a fun Saturday gallery crawl where everyone who visits each gallery can win some really nice prizes and meet and greet artists. Well, I hate having my picture taken, but the one above is me on the porch with Bob, the gallery owner. Bob and his staff always make us feel so welcome, it is a pleasure to visit them! I had a great time yesterday and met many collectors of my work. One group of lovely ladies took pictures with me. I felt like a rock star!<br />On the way home we ran into steady downpours. Later we learned there were tornado watches throughout the areas we drove through.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJOSfXb7YjA4NH3VYHLlaQ38Pupbh7AaA1abq8Z9Qit_krHiwvuYhGx7Mmd2cg350KMIqgv3zi_qRIJeQEF9T5A9iKgMFGFFh1CpuzQ6nq3XTV0kyMcbK3NIrsS75U8ZrEbOgRywgXtV0/s1600/Cow+Attitude.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 226px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479821387385630898" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJOSfXb7YjA4NH3VYHLlaQ38Pupbh7AaA1abq8Z9Qit_krHiwvuYhGx7Mmd2cg350KMIqgv3zi_qRIJeQEF9T5A9iKgMFGFFh1CpuzQ6nq3XTV0kyMcbK3NIrsS75U8ZrEbOgRywgXtV0/s320/Cow+Attitude.jpg" /></a> I just finished painting this black and white beauty today. I call it Cow Attitude. This piece is acrylic and measures 3-1/2" x 2-1/2". I don't often do animals, so this was a great break from buildings.</div><div>Later this week we will be on the road again camping in Mackinaw City and visiting Mackinac Island to paint and take photos. Ahhhhhh, the kids and dogs are staying behind. Can't wait!</div><div>Till next time,<br /><br /></div><div></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-84519739708656372202010-06-01T17:24:00.000-07:002010-06-01T17:42:35.727-07:00From Freezing To FryingHas it really been over three weeks since I checked in? The calendar doesn't lie. It is amazing how time does fly. One minute I am complaining about late season snow and the next I am frying at a campground!<br />Although we have been away camping, I have been painting every day. It is a bit of a challenge in the heat and wind. I have worked on several painting and completed two that I have shown in this post. Below is my husband, who was not crazy about being included in my blog. We love to have a campfire every night and as you can see, our dogs also love it! Over the weekend we had both our kids and their girlfriends/boyfriends for a cookout. I would have taken pictures but it poured with rain about the time they all showed up. Isn't that the way it goes. We had a good time anyway as we all shoved together into the RV. <br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiiCtsrTviekzrv2ApcC3qer5p6iOLWW0Zu4r6Pak2GfWTaROfPrVUT0stArEGN5OzZPiJNEW4op-FW1kyCt0qA7EbrQXQgkIWw40uHmiRVq4Q8AyCL1zZd9lWijhq-gqISRCmy2jGweU/s1600/Camping.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477966811407715298" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiiCtsrTviekzrv2ApcC3qer5p6iOLWW0Zu4r6Pak2GfWTaROfPrVUT0stArEGN5OzZPiJNEW4op-FW1kyCt0qA7EbrQXQgkIWw40uHmiRVq4Q8AyCL1zZd9lWijhq-gqISRCmy2jGweU/s320/Camping.JPG" /></a> The painting below is called Beyond Mission Church. Mission Church is on Mackinac Island and it is listed as the oldest church in Michigan. Many weddings take place there every year. This piece is acrylic and measures 3-1/2" x 2-1/2"<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUMNUQ7Lj8dezUMrvQSXm7PYpFGONy_TSJhJdfLUW1UeK2eTVnXZ6zTxaMwUnzZL9QBoigBBowr-mkxwz1ivuAk3rqZxgjx0CmI-egEqgRfCWMBcxgSREBydEh5hvW1MB_N1rcVbYB5hQ/s1600/Over+Mission+Church.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 226px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477966807838346674" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUMNUQ7Lj8dezUMrvQSXm7PYpFGONy_TSJhJdfLUW1UeK2eTVnXZ6zTxaMwUnzZL9QBoigBBowr-mkxwz1ivuAk3rqZxgjx0CmI-egEqgRfCWMBcxgSREBydEh5hvW1MB_N1rcVbYB5hQ/s320/Over+Mission+Church.jpg" /></a> The next painting is also acrylic and the same size. This painting is of the parsonage where the minister of Little Stone Church lives. Land and privacy are at a premium on the island, and as a result many residents have privacy shrubs and gates. I have always been fascinated by this house and garden and even more so after meeting Molly, the ministers wife. She is a lovely person and we had a wonderful chat last year when I painted in front of the gallery. Hope to talk to her again this year For those in the Michigan area, I will be painting at Twisted Fish Gallery in Elk Rapids, from 3:00 PM to 5:30 pm on Saturday. If you are in the area, please stop by and say hi!</div><div>Well, I need to continue to unpack the RV as we just got home a couple of hours ago.</div><div>Till next time,<br /><br /></div><div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkTDNtem8tnAiN5RI8uz6iIJAOzf8kJWLTXYVJKw2jH9I-erS4h8XXUOHL4cujwm2SYIwYKXYKuxvzuAMvpnbhr8qnHPPaGmJUnTF9aQ1zRpL28jvRQ5sg9bP0WAkH_-ifFcKedjeedFg/s1600/The+Parsonage.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 227px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477966799230984994" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkTDNtem8tnAiN5RI8uz6iIJAOzf8kJWLTXYVJKw2jH9I-erS4h8XXUOHL4cujwm2SYIwYKXYKuxvzuAMvpnbhr8qnHPPaGmJUnTF9aQ1zRpL28jvRQ5sg9bP0WAkH_-ifFcKedjeedFg/s320/The+Parsonage.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div>Gail Haytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710043609771598514noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1208102452825066486.post-17915881863245898922010-05-09T14:59:00.000-07:002010-05-09T15:58:28.704-07:00Freezing On Mackinac Island<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjteqDaMQymNDzul0Tq5K0co8_jcIEIANV1WuVx2u1Y-WJCGajKz-Mg8n3080y4R-1X0xERGflWQENdz-8xrbotfA3zwsT1gS9NsyatiBk5KDhINxns0DuE5reMlC8n_b5jLCTtF2ZRmxs/s1600/Proud+Leader.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 318px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469395615126510562" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjteqDaMQymNDzul0Tq5K0co8_jcIEIANV1WuVx2u1Y-WJCGajKz-Mg8n3080y4R-1X0xERGflWQENdz-8xrbotfA3zwsT1gS9NsyatiBk5KDhINxns0DuE5reMlC8n_b5jLCTtF2ZRmxs/s320/Proud+Leader.jpg" /></a> Thought I would show one of my latest paintings that I delivered to the island on Friday. This is a well loved Indian chief who is affectionately called Duck. He is a well known figure who officiates at all the parades. This painting is 4 inches by 4 inches and is painted with acrylic on ampersand gessoboard. I had a lot of fun with this piece and am considering painting some of the reinactments at Fort Mackinac.<br />Friday, my husband and I made our first trip to Mackinac Island for the season. The weather was horrible. The ferry ride wasn't too bad considering the windy conditions but for some reason the coast guard was sitting outside the harbor-hmmm. We walked up to Lilacs and Lace, another store owned by Jack, the gallery owner. He has just expanded his store and gave us a tour. On the way over to Victorian Summer Gallery, about two blocks away, we observed some of the horses returning to the island.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVHtt3Rn1yHSGB-bZpCNc60QRcb1gJsJc1-THYf6YYufA3r3F5CzkXdKzNUbZIg3wyXGEFLMTyjQmgBRJlWE1GrueYbLlOKHdCC8bLitfiRKSqxPnXJ-Cv4UsL_WfdbZQdnKnGAii2Uqw/s1600/Essence+of+Mackinac.jpg"></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrV5wdKPs1uVZ7uzcq3Mwk-kII6UpK1_PWvqY_nxjDF3lvmEU1f5nAhW0u9fLgvsy2KDjSsdTaKbjbS8ehoBGcvDl1GnwuI1DJxLSWTXH4tIjelDET1Dg1NJu0tZc_mq9d5QfpXhVOciU/s1600/P5070013.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 220px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469395591136948754" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrV5wdKPs1uVZ7uzcq3Mwk-kII6UpK1_PWvqY_nxjDF3lvmEU1f5nAhW0u9fLgvsy2KDjSsdTaKbjbS8ehoBGcvDl1GnwuI1DJxLSWTXH4tIjelDET1Dg1NJu0tZc_mq9d5QfpXhVOciU/s320/P5070013.JPG" /></a> This was the best photo I could get as these big boys were moving at a fast pace. They had just taken a ferry ride from the upper peninsula and were spooking out at every noise! Just before I took this shot we had to scatter as one horse actually jumped up onto the sidewalk and almost took out the trash container in the picture. The island in season has over a hundred horses that are used for everything from taxis, trash pick up even UPS deliveries. No cars are allowed on the island.</div><div>The gallery is not open for business yet this year and looks a little bare without all the flowers in planter boxes that will be present soon. I was so busy talking with the people in the gallery I forgot to take any pictures. I get engrossed in conversation!</div><div> </div><div> </div><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 290px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469395567616302034" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS7NBrgYsNfvg6vtwSqYwzRirtppUaeI7D17jt4W7uvfoEWqaugSoJhQWCRlA6cUGlmdmL0lK4OzSMxO3HousWXwUHEpPLAOig2gvcC7CM95Ve739J17J5okmadGq2afmqgFGe_UHdFF0/s320/P5070019.JPG" /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKxneQXMIR-Bg9FGrDfCwwskiAaiilx-_TSVHWskmBpxCT0iJQ8UaxBEl7OFvYrY_TDw3H7oaLUgHz3totIxE2A0OeED3pF9neYGi72pw8awEJLRfk-Z__-ua8pTCBUUnj00I6MryGCHI/s1600/P5070016.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469395577717154514" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKxneQXMIR-Bg9FGrDfCwwskiAaiilx-_TSVHWskmBpxCT0iJQ8UaxBEl7OFvYrY_TDw3H7oaLUgHz3totIxE2A0OeED3pF9neYGi72pw8awEJLRfk-Z__-ua8pTCBUUnj00I6MryGCHI/s320/P5070016.JPG" /></a> After leaving the gallery we walked up to the Grand Hotel to see the tulips that are on display every spring. It was so cold that every one of them was completed closed up! I can't blame them. We quickly walked back downtown and parked ourselves in one of the restaurants for lunch. We waited as long as possible before walking down to the boat docks.
